2010 Population Table

According to the 2010 Census, Oakland's population is 390,724, a decrease of 8,760 (2.2%) from the 2000 Census on which the current (2003) redistricting plan was adopted.

Due to population changes and shifts between the 2000 and 2010 censuses, district populations are now out of balance. The City Charter requires districts to be reviewed and redrawn every 10 years following the decennial federal census in order to make them "as equal as possible in population."

To arrive at the new district ideal or target population, we simply divide the 2010 Census population of 390,724 by 7 (the number of Council Districts). The result is 55,818.

Balanced when the current district maps were adopted in 2003 using 2000 census data, the districts now range in population from 51,667 to 62,510.  The overall population deviation is 19.4%: from 7.4% (4,151 persons) below to 12% (6,692 persons) above the ideal.

Neighborhood Maps

"Oakland has many neighborhoods. Neighborhoods are usually nebulous or informal, and Oakland’s are no exception. Much depends on who is talking (lifelong resident vs. real estate agent, etc.), and when (old names fade, as new areas constantly regroup and rename themselves)." ~ Oakland Wiki
